My objective working with today’s typical athlete, who more than likely possesses muscle imbalances and inequalities, is to promote a functional training program designed to address factors involving unified balance, stability, mobility, movement efficiency, and appropriate forms of flexibility, agile  strength and neuromuscular control in different types of environments (stable to unstable) and training in different planes of motion(frontal ,lateral ,transverse).

This will ultimately improve your performance, race times, placing and hopefully reduce and diminish the incidence of an injury.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT COACH ?

A coach will encourage you to set goals that you truly want, ask you to do more than you may have done on your own, help you focus better in order to produce results more quickly and lastly provide you with the tools, support, and structure to accomplish more.

The best coaches KNOW THE SPORT. To be able to teach effectively the coach must have in-depth understanding of the sport from the fundamental skills to advanced tactics and strategy. Coaches may have experience playing, but not all former players make good coaches. Coaches must plan for the season, know the progressive nature of training adaptation, know the rules, and provide a simple, structured environment for athletes to succeed.

The best coaches KNOW THE ATHLETE. Being aware of individual differences in athletes is also an important ingredient in coaching excellence.. Individualizing communication and motivation to specific clients  is key to  their success. Paying attention to the clients’ emotions, strengths and weaknesses are the responsibility of a good coach.

The very best coaches are PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO – Success in and out of sports very often comes out of a love for what you are doing. The more you love your sport, the better chance that you have of reaching your goals. Passion (love) is a high test fuel that will power you over obstacles, beyond setbacks and through frustration until you achieve success. As a coach, your passion for the sport and for coaching as a profession is what will ultimately make you a great coach.

Great coaches CONTINUALLY CHALLENGE THEIR ATHLETES TO DO BETTER AND PUSH THEIR LIMITS – One way that great coaches inspire their athletes to believe in themselves is by continually putting them in situations which challenge their limiting beliefs. By always pushing their athletes outside of their comfort zone, physically, mentally and emotionally, and then helping them discover that, in fact, they can do better than they first believed they could is basically the principle of  “GET COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE .” That is, the only way to grow physically and emotionally is to constantly challenge yourself to do things that aren’t easy, to attempt things that truly stretch you. The best coaches do not allow their players to just get by with the status quo. They refuse to tolerate mediocrity in effort, attitude, technique, training or performance. Because they continually challenge their athletes, they are able to keep them highly motivated. There is nothing more motivating to an athlete than being challenged, experiencing themselves successfully rising to meet that test and as a result, improving. When coaches fail to adequately challenge their athletes, when they instead allow them to remain stagnating within their comfort zone, they will ultimately end up losing those athletes to boredom and apathy. The very best coaches GET  THEIR ATHLETES TO BELIEVE in themselves.

The great coaches are GREAT COMMUNICATORS – You can’t be effective as a coach unless you can successfully reach the individuals who you are working with. Good coaches understand that communication is a two-way street and involves a back and forth between coach and athlete. Bad coaches think that communication is a one-way street. You talk and the athletes listen. PERIOD! Instead, effective communication entails that you as a coach carefully listen to what your athletes are saying. When your athletes talk you must BE QUIET INSIDE SO THAT YOU CAN LISTEN. Unless you carefully listen to them when they talk then you won’t have a clue as to what your athletes are really saying or how to best help them. Far too many coaches are too busy countering in their head what their athletes are saying to actually hear them. If you can’t learn how to listen then you will never truly be effective in reaching your clients.

Great coaches seek out NEW INFORMATION. While a good coach knows a great deal about a sport (s, )he must continue to learn and develop new training techniques. Staying up to date of new research, training and rehab information, attending coaching clinics, camps, and seeking out tips from elite coaches and athletes is a sign of a great coach. Watching videos, reading books, studying periodicals can also be helpful. However, seeking out education is a great thing for coaches, but they must seek out forms of education that are well researched and up to date. It’s astonishing how many coaching and personal certifications are available to the general public. Many of the course handbooks and presenters associated with these certifications lack the updated research and studies , coaching knowledge and awareness, and overall quality and excellence that hardworking and knowledge-hungry coaches and athletes warrant. In the coaching and personal training fields alone, there are more than 700 certifications available to anyone who wants to become a coach or personal trainer. These certifications require no degree and 99% of them do not require experience / educational background. The only condition is that you need to be  at least 18 years old. .

A great coach is not easy to find and requires a very unique set of talents and skills. If you are looking for a COACH, these qualities may help you identify the strengths and weakness of typical coaching programs. It’s unlikely any one person will excel in all areas, but a good coach will have many of these qualities.

Please contact me if these principles match what you are looking for. Whether you are training or preparing for a 5K , trying to qualify for the Hawaii Ironman Championship or just want to improve your fitness, I can help you.
